Fête du Citron - the Hand of Buddha

It looks like an anomaly of nature, doesn't it but in fact this lemon, known as the Hand of Buddha (Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis), is one of the oldest members of the citrus family. Although it smells strongly of lemon, it has no juicy pulp hidden beneath its rind. Instead, the Buddha’s Hand is grown commercially for its powerful zest. The aromatic rind is used to flavor lemon liqueurs and specialty vodkas, and provides aroma to lemon-scented cosmetics. Chinese and Japanese households use it to perfume their rooms and personal items, such as clothing. It even has a place in some religious ceremonies in buddhist temples. According to tradition, Buddha prefers the "fingers" of the fruit to be in a position where they resemble a closed rather than open hand, as closed hands symbolize to Buddha the act of prayer.

Pour cette raison, la Main de Bouddha est cultivée commercialement pour son zeste puissant. Selon la tradition, le Bouddha préfère que les "doigts" du fruit soient dans une position fermée plutôt qu'une main ouverte ,les mains fermées symbolisant pour Bouddha l'acte de la prière.

So here we are again! Menton's famous Fete du Citron has opened and this year - the 79th edition - the theme is 'Regions of France' - so let's start in the Champagne Ardennes region and a Fountain of Champagne. As you walk past, you hear corks popping and champagne being poured - pity it's only water...

A metal frame is constructed for each exhibit and then it's covered in wire netting and then each lemon or orange is fixed to the wire with a rubber band. It takes a long time. This year 182 tons of fruit have been used - that's nearly 1 million lemons and oranges.

Nous allons donc commencer par la région Champagne Ardennes et une fontaine de champagne . Quand vous passez devant , vous entendez les bouchons qui sautent et le champagne qui coule - malheureusement, ce n'est que de l'eau ...

Une armature métallique est construite pour chaque pièce , elle est couverte de grillage et ensuite chaque citron ou d'orange est fixé sur le fil avec un élastique . Cela prend beaucoup de temps . Cette année 182 tonnes de fruits ont été utilisées - c'est près de 1 million de citrons et d'oranges.

The Gentle Man

Earlier in the day this man had been helpful in pointing out a carpark space. Later, he recognised me when he was sitting on the pavement, saw the camera, and invited me to take a photo.

I don't normally photograph an SDF (sans domicile fixe, or homeless person) but he was posing, making funny faces and then offered me this little model of a cow which he displayed on his wrist. Of course I gave him some money. Now I wish I'd given him more.The cow sits on my desk and brings me luck. I also wish I'd asked his story. Most SDFs put a paper cup on the pavement - this gentle man begs with a beautiful piece of tapestry, perhaps from India or Thailand.

En début de journée,cet homme m'avait été utile pour sortir d'un parking. Plus tard, alors qu'il était assis sur le trottoir, il m'a reconnu, il a vu mon appareil et m'a invitée à prendre une photo.

Normalement, je ne photographie pas un SDF (sans domicile fixe, ou une personne sans-abri , mais il prenait la pose, faisait des grimaces amusantes ou sérieuses, puis m'a offert ce petit modèle d'une vache qu'il posait sur son poignet. Bien sûr, je lui ai donné un peu d'argent. Maintenant, j'aurais aimé lui avoir donné plus.Le vache se trouve sur mon bureau et me porte chance. La plupart des SDF posent un morceau de papier sur le trottoir - cet homme sympathique mendie avec un beau morceau de tapisserie, peut-être venant d'Inde ou Thailande. J'aurais également souhaité lui demander son histoire.

This was fashion icon Coco Chanel's summer home, La Pausa, in Roquebrune which was built for her by her lover, the extravagant Duke of Westminster. She was actively involved in the design of the building which stands in 9 acres and lived here from 1929 to 1953.

The estate has a long and fascinating history involving artists, musicians, writers and painters, including Stravinsky, Cocteau, Picasso, Bonnard, Luchino Visconti, Somerset Maugham. It was later bought by author, literary agent and art collector Emery Reves: during that time, Winston Churchill was a frequent guest and it is where he completed his memoirs and enjoyed painting the view. But the villa was also a social destination for other figures as Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, the Duke of Windsor, Noel Coward, Aristotle Onassis, Greta Garbo, Rose Kennedy, as well as Graham Sutherland, Prince Rainier and Princess Grace, Konrad Adenauer, Anthony Eden, and Paul Reynaud.

La Pausa is believed to be for sale at an asking price of around $50 million.

These photos of La Pausa were taken in 2009, (on the old donkey track that leads to Roquebrune village) with the camera before the camera before the camera I currently use! Hôtel Adhémar de Lantagnac

This little alleyway is irresistible to me. Sometimes it's open, sometimes it's closed but when it's open it leads to the Hôtel particulier Adhémar de Lantagnac, which is not an hotel at all but is now used by the Service du Patrimone. An 'hôtel particulier' is a beautiful house that once belonged to a family of prominent citizens.

Here you'll find a small boutigue selling books on Menton and works of the artists of the region. There are exhibitions throughout the year but really just go in and look around - enjoy the frescoes, many sadly damaged, the beautiful old shutters, the original glass in the windows.

You'll find it at 24, Rue Saint Michel (the pedestrian street) and not far from Place aux Herbes.

Cette petite ruelle est irrésistible pour moi. Parfois, elle est accessible, parfois non, mais quand son portail est ouvert, elle conduit à l' Hôtel particulier Adhémar de Lantagnac, ce qui n'est pas un hôtel dans le sens ordinaire, et qui est maintenant utilisé par le Service du Patrimone. 'Hôtel particulier' signifie que c'est une belle maison qui appartient à une famille de notables de la ville.

Ici vous trouverez une petite Boutique qui vend de livres sur Menton et sur les œuvres des artistes de la région . Il y a des expositions tout au long de l'année, mais on peut juste entrer et pour regarder le décor, admirer les fresques dont beaucoup malheureusement sont endommagées, les beaux volets anciens, les carreaux d'origine des fenêtres.

Vous le trouverez au 24, Rue Saint-Michel ( la rue piétonne ) et non loin de la Place aux Herbes.

Menton Daily Photo's 5th Birthday!

Menton Daily Photo and Monte Carlo Daily Photo celebrate their 5th birthdays today - that's one photo (sometimes more) every single day for five years - twice! Not quite sure how it happened, but it did!

In fact, it all started with Eric Tenin's Paris Daily Photo and his vision for a world-wide City Daily Photo community of which today there are 1452 representing cities all over the world. I will be forever grateful to Eric for starting something that was to totally change my life and in ways I never could have imagined. Who knew I'd fall asleep at night reading books on photography!

According to Google, Menton Daily Photo has 12,000 visits a month (of which 6000 are unique visits) with 20,000 page views a month. Monte Carlo Daily Photo has 13,000 visits a month (of which 7,500 are unique visits) and with 27,000 page views. You can see, with these monthly numbers, why I can't stop and indeed I don't want to! It's such a honour and a privilege to know so many people are enjoying the photos. A heartfelt thank you to my wonderful readers, for your loyalty, encouragement, kind emails and comments - without you, I think I'd have faltered long ago.

But along with the numbers have come friends - blogging friends, photography friends, people who come and visit and who I'd not have known but for the blogs. People who write me - we've never met - but are friends nonetheless. And one thing is particularly important to me, acceptance by the people of the amazing village where I live - Gorbio. I adore this village, its traditions and its people who have so generously made me (a foreigner) welcome. They know me as the English woman, with the blogs - the one who always has a camera in her hand! I feel very much a part of this medieval hill village and I can't begin to tell you how much this means to me.

Thank you to my dear friend and neighbour, Agnès Pinelli, who corrects the translations for Menton Daily Photo every single evening. A big hug, Agnès.

Et une chose est particulièrement importante pour moi, c'est l'accueil par les habitants de l'étonnant village où je vis - Gorbio. J'adore ce village, ses traditions et ses gens qui ont si généreusement accueillie l' étrangère que je suis. Ils me connaissent comme la dame anglaise des blogs - celle qui a toujours une appareil-photo à la main! Je me sens très bien intégrée dans ce village médiéval et je n'ai pas de mots pour vous dire ce que cela signifie pour moi .

The Dolls of Bru

Each year the Rotary Club organises a massive Broc-Troc in the Palais de l'Europe in Menton. Broc-Troc means Broc - for brocante and Troc, which means to barter. These days it's simply a massive sale of antiques and every day items and it draws enormous crowds - this year: 11,000.

The seller of these dolls told me he bought up everything that was for sale in the company called 'Bru' in Valenciennes that closed in 1920. They were on sale for 10 euros each. The seller, François, lives at Draguignan in the Var and anyone interested can write to him at francoisit@hotmail.fr
