Summer's End - the Scooter Dog

Meet Willy, the Berger Pyrénées (Pyrenean Shepherd Dog) who rides around Menton on a scooter with his owner, Cornelia - a charming German lady who gives French conversation classes in Menton. In this photograph, they were in Gorbio for the Blessing of the Animals.

This small sheepdog of the mountains of the Pyrénées is considered the oldest of the French herding dogs. They were used in concert with the large white sheep guardian dogs, the Great Pyrénées (Pyrenean Mountain Dog) of the region. The little dog herded the sheep. The big dog watched over them. The natural abilities of this shaggy shepherd are legend - flocks being entrusted to the two different dogs without a human handler. They were officially recognized by the French Kennel Club in 1921.

The breed is also called a Labrit in France. You see many in the south of France.

  3. I didn't know about these dogs, but there is a breeder of Great Pyrenees here. When you drive by, they blend right in with the sheep, but if you pull up and stop, even on the other side of the road, they begin barking at you. I'm sure nothing would get past them.

  8. My apologies to Willy. I thought he was a Westie! I just told my husband, though, that when we move, I need a Vespa with a basket for Kasey and Decker!

Thanks for your comments on Decker. When I told the vet what he was doing with the food, the vet said that maybe Decker was getting senile. I said, "Senile? Then all dogs that bury their food are senile." He just looked at me. Maybe I need a new vet.

Anyway, Decker is, as you know, also having a few health problems. However, we have changed him to a halter collar, and he's doing much better.

  9. Ooooo, nice scooter. The doggie is a cutie. Nowadays dogs have a better life. When I visited South Korea and was on a dosmetic plane, I saw a lady carried her dog in a carrier bag but the dog was barking cause it was afraid so the lady took the dog out and put on her lap with safety belt on the dog too...lol. So dogs now travel in cars, scooter and plane too...lol
