Weekend Africain - the Sorcerer

Beware the sorcerer - or is it a demon! When he moves there's a massive cloud of dust. This was a stunning piece of dance theatre with the sorcerer as the baddie who is eventually overcome by the dancers and so good wins the day.

Méfiez-vous du sorcier - ou bien est-ce un démon ! Quand il se déplace , il y a un nuage énorme de poussière. Ce fut une superbe démonstration de danse-théâtre avec le sorcier dans le rôle du méchant qui est finalement vaincu par les danseurs gagnants du jour.

Weekend Africain - the Ivory Coast

The medieval village of Gorbio is 'en fete' this weekend as the village resounds to the sounds of Africa - the Ivory Coast to be exact.  This is the third Weekend Africain to be held in the village where you can any of the many classes in dance, drums, percussion, fabrication of masks and totems, make-up, design - there are classes for children and for adults.

But it's at night when the real magic begin. 

First an African meal under the stars (I'll tell you about that another day) and then sit back and lose yourselves in the hot rhythms of eleven amazing performers in the group, Tamary.

Le village médiéval de Gorbio est «en fête» ce week-end et il résonne aux sons de l'Afrique - la Côte d'Ivoire pour être exact. C'est la troisième Weekend Africain qui se tient dans le village où on peut prendre l'un des nombreux cours,  de danse, de tambours,de percussions, de fabrication de masques et totems, de maquillage ou de  dessin.  Il existe des cours pour les enfants et pour les adultes.
 
Mais c'est la nuit que la vraie magie commence.

D'abord un repas africain sous les étoiles (je vous en parlerai un autre jour), puis asseyez-vous et laissez- vous emporter par  les rythmes chauds de onze artistes étonnants du groupe, Tamary.

This is a photo I'd taken earlier in the day.  Near to the sea preparations are taking place for the evening's concert.

Musicians are rehearsing for the concert and this little girl has the whole dance floor to herself and is loving it!

It was great to see two guys dancing the tango together.  I spoke to them afterwards and they reminded me that in 2011 I'd displayed a photo of them dancing (legs and shoes only) and had commented 'that high heels weren't necessary.' Not sure how I missed the hairy legs. Sorry guys!

C'était génial de voir deux hommes qui dansaient le tango ensemble. Je leur ai parlé par la suite et ils m'ont rappelé qu'en 2011 j'avais publié une photo d'eux en train de danser (jambes et des chaussures seulement) et que mon commentaire était " que les talons hauts ne sont pas nécessaires .' Je ne sais comment j'e n'avais pas remarqué les jambes poilues. Désolé!

'Apero Tango' - the Italian Couple

This charming couple, who live in Italy, come to Menton every year especially to dance the tango.

I love to watch them dance - the rapport between them, the love, the concentration, the fun. Sometimes they fall about laughing.

Absolutely adorable people and such beautiful dancers too.

J'aime les regarder danser - le lien entre eux deux, l'amour, la concentration, le plaisir . Parfois, ils se mettent à rire​​.

Ce sont des personnes absolument adorables et de beaux danseurs aussi. 

'Apero Tango' - Tango in the Street

It's one of my favourite times of the year - when Menton celebrates four days of tango. The town resonates to the sounds of Argentina - you can watch tango danced by the masters, you can attend courses at every level, you can see films, paintings, you can buy the outfits including those wonderful shoes. You can eat Argentinian specialities - but the time of the day I love best is between 18h.30 and 20h00 when, each day, afficionados of tango dance in the streets. Some are local, many come from other countries. So prepare for a few days of tango photos where the dancers lose themselves in the rhythms of a smoky bar in Argentina.

Normally 'apero tango,' as it's called, is held in Place du Cap and indeed it was advertised at that venue. At the last minute, the powers that be decided it should be held in a small street at the back of Menton's market. Some of the dancers were not happy - to dance on the a road that is convex and with a difficult surface on which to glide, was difficult. The street is narrow and with a much more closed-in atmosphere compared to Place du Cap - the explanation for the change in location was that the bar/restaurants in Rue des Marins welcomed the dancers. Seemingly they were not welcome in Place du Cap this year.

C'est un de mes moments préférés de l'année , quand Menton fête le Tango pendant quatre jours . La ville résonne aux sons de l'Argentine et on peut regarder le tango dansé par des maîtres , on peut assister à des cours à tous les niveaux , on peut voir des films , des peintures , on peut acheter des tenues , y compris des merveilleuses chaussures. On peut manger des spécialités argentines - mais le moment de la journée que j'aime le plus, c'est entre 18h.30 et 20h quand, chaque jour , les aficionados du tango dansent dans les rues. Certains sont des locaux, mais beaucoup viennent d'autres pays . Alors préparez-vous pour quelques jours de photos de tango quand les danseurs se perdent dans les rythmes d'un bar enfumé en Argentine.

Normalement 'l'apéro tango », comme on l'appelle, se tient sur la Place du Cap et en effet il a été annoncé en  ce lieu. À la dernière minute, les pouvoirs en place ont décidé qu'il devrait avoir lieu dans une petite rue à l'arrière du marché de Menton. Certains des danseurs n'étaient pas heureux -  danser sur une rue qui est convexe et avec une surface difficile sur laquelle ils glissent, c'était difficile. La rue est étroite, avec une atmosphère beaucoup plus fermée par rapport à la Place du Cap. L'explication de ce changement de lieu, c'est que les bars/restaurants de rue des Marins ont bien accueilli les danseurs. Apparemment, ils n'étaient pas les bienvenus à la Place du Cap cette année.

If there's a belly dancer brandishing a sword in Place aux Herbes, you know it's high summer.   Menton is jam-packed with visitors and there's entertainment all over the place.

Gorbio - 'The Year of India' - the Tabla and the Santoor

Our last day at the Vernissage/Show for the opening of 'The Year in India' and today we meet the musicians. The music was utterly beautiful.  Sometimes Nihar and Domenco  played alone and sometimes they played for Jessie, the beautiful dancer we met the other day. (see smallest photo)

In the main photo is Nihar Mehta who plays the Tabla. The tabla is a membranophone percussion instrument (similar to bongos), used in Hindustani classical music and in popular and devotional music of the Indian subcontinent. The instrument consists of a pair of hand drums of contrasting sizes and timbres. The term tabla is derived from an Arabic word, tabl, which simply means "drum."

Playing technique involves extensive use of the fingers and palms in various configurations to create a wide variety of different sounds, reflected in the mnemonic syllables.  The heel of the hand is used to apply pressure or in a sliding motion on the larger drum so that the pitch is changed during the sound's decay.

Domenico Caputo  plays the Santoor.  The Kashmiri santoor is an ancient string musical instrument native to Jammu and Kashmir, with origins in Persia. A primitive ancestor of this type of instruments was invented in Mesopotamia (1600-911 BC).

The santoor is a trapezoid-shaped hammered dulcimer often made of walnut, with seventy two strings. The special-shaped mallets  are lightweight and are held between the index and middle fingers. A typical santoor has two sets of bridges, providing a range of three octaves.

The Indian santoor is more rectangular and can have more strings than the Persian counterpart, which generally has 72 strings.

Notre dernier jour au Vernissage / Spectacle pour l'ouverture de " L'Année de l'Inde » et aujourd'hui nous rencontrons les musiciens. La musique était absolument magnifique. Parfois Nihar et Domenico jouaient seuls et parfois ils accompagnaient Jessie, la belle danseuse que nous avons rencontrée l'autre jour. (voir petite photo)

Sur la photo principale, c'est Nihar Mehta qui joue du tabla. Gorbio - 'The Year of India' - the Vernissage

This is Luc Lanlo, wearing a beautiful Indian silk waistcoat, who, along with Michel Imbert, curated 'The Year of India' the wonderful contemporary exhibition of Indian artists, currently showing in the Tour Lascaris and the presbytery in Gorbio village.

These photographs are from the vernissage evening. In his speech, Luc spoke with great emotion about the new generation of Indian artists.  

The Mayor of Gorbio, Michel Isnard, spoke of
his Spanish gypsy origins from his mother, and said that the gypsies, both Gypsy and Roma, had a common origin,  that of a people who, driven by famine, had left the highlands of Rajasthan in India in the XIIth century,  and were scattered in North Africa, Central Europe and Spain. He added: 'In Gorbio, the circle closes and the next Spanish Gypsy flamenco festival here will find their most ancient roots, those of India!"

More tomorrow - but first a big thankyou to Luc for a truly fabulous exhibition of sensational art - so varied - yet all with the passion and colour of India.

Ces photos ont été prises à la soirée du vernissage. Dans son discours, Luc a parlé avec beaucoup d'émotion de la nouvelle génération d' artistes indiens.

Le Maire de Gorbio, Michel Isnard, (en noir sur la petite photo) a parlé de ses origines gitanes espagnoles par sa mère, et a rappelé que les Gitans, les Tsiganes et les Roms avaient une origine commune, celle d'un peuple qui, poussé par la famine, avait quitté les hauts plateaux du Rajasthan en Inde au XIIe siècle, et a été dispersé en Afrique du Nord, en Europe Centrale et en Espagne. Il a ajouté: «Dans Gorbio, le cercle se referme et le prochain Festival de Flamenco gitan espagnol va retrouver ses racines les plus anciennes, celles de l'Inde!" 

Demain, la suite - mais d'abord un grand merci à Luc pour une fabuleuse exposition  de cet art si sensationnel et varié - avec toute la passion et les couleurs de l'Inde.

Gorbio - 'The Year of India' - Alexis Kersey

The Tour Lascaris and the presbytery in Gorbio village is the current home of a superb exhibition of 12 Indian artists.

On the beautiful lower level of the Tour Lascaris you can see the work of Anglo-Indian artist, Alexis Kersey. 

The vision and richness of this artist comes about because of the collision of the two cultures. Born in Mysore, India but raised and educated in the United Kingdom, Alexis Kersey brings a particular unique viewpoint to that of the colonial past and cultural heritage of the British in India.


His work features in many important collections throughout the world.

La Tour Lascaris et le presbytère du village de Gorbio sont actuellement les centres d'une superbe exposition de douze artistes indiens.

Sur le beau niveau inférieur de la Tour Lascaris vous pouvez voir lea oeuvres de l'artiste anglo-indien, Alexis Kersey.

La vision et la richesse de cet artiste viennent du fait de la collision des deux cultures. Né à Mysore, en Inde, mais ayant grandi et étudié au Royaume-Uni, Alexis Kersey apporte un point de vue particulier unique à l'héritage du passé colonial et culturel des Britanniques, en Inde.

Gorbio - 'The Year of India' - Jessie Veeratapillay

Last night Gorbio was 'in Fete' to celebrate the opening of a major exhibition of Indian art in the Tour Lascaris (the château) and the presbytery.

The evening started with 'le tout monde' arriving for the vernissage and admiring the truly amazing works of art by 12 contemporary Indian artists - curated by Luc Lanlo and Michel Imbert.

We'll be visiting the exhibition, which continues until October 6th, having a drink at the vernissage, meeting some of the people, but last night belonged to two wonderful musicians (we'll meet them too) and this stunningly beautiful and expressive dancer of Bharatanatyam classical Indian dance:  Jessie Veeratapillay. Bharatanatyam is a reworked dance-form from the traditional "sadir" known for its grace, purity, tenderness, and sculpturesque poses.

La nuit dernière, Gorbio était « en fête » pour célébrer l'ouverture d'une grande exposition d'art indien à la Tour Lascaris (le château) et au presbytère.

La soirée a débuté avec l'arrivée de « Tout Public " pour le vernissage et la découverte des œuvres d'art vraiment étonnantes  réalisées par 12 artistes indiens contemporains -ensemble monté par Luc Lanlo et Michel Imbert.

Nous allons visiter l'exposition, qui se poursuivra jusqu'au 6 Octobre, prendre un verre au vernissage, rencontrer certaines personnes, mais la nuit dernière appartenait à deux merveilleux musiciens (nous les rencontrerons aussi) et à cette extraordinairement belle et expressive danseuse de Bharatanatyam, une danse classique indienne: Jessie Veeratapillay. Le Bharatanatyam est une danse - forme remaniée du traditionnel " sadir " connue pour sa grâce, sa pureté, sa tendresse et ses poses sculpturales.

The Magic of Menton

This is the same beach we saw yesterday, when it was full of holiday makers. This photo was taken at 7h.45 nearly two hours earlier - and as you'll see there is hardly a soul on the beach. The light is much better for a photo too, of course.

Méchoui - Community, familes, friendship

Our last day at the méchou and this is what it's all about: long tables under the olive trees, sheep roasting on the spit, an amazing group of village volunteers who made it all happen and most of all - community, families, friendship in this most wonderful of villages in the south of France - Gorbio.

Notre dernier jour au méchoui et voici ce dont il s'agissait: de longues tables sous les oliviers, sept moutons rôtis à la broche, un groupe étonnant de villageois bénévoles qui ont tout préparé et par dessus tout - une communauté, des familles, de l'amitié dans le plus merveilleux des villages du sud de la France: Gorbio.

Mechoui - Ribs!

And just when we thought it was all over, suddenly we notice a pile of sheep ribs  being cooked on a barbecue.  Presumably they hadn't cooked right through on the spit - or  perhaps they are being re-cooked with barbecue flavours.   I don't know.  The water is needed to douse the fire when it gets too hot.

Et juste au moment où nous  pensions que tout était fini,  nous avons soudain remarqué un tas de côtes de mouton en train de cuire sur un barbecue. On peut supposer qu'elles n'avaient pas cuit à la broche - ou peut-être qu'elles étaient recuites avec des saveurs de barbecue.  Je ne sais pas. L'eau était nécessaire pour maitriser le feu quand il était trop vif.
