The Serenity Box

Isn't this a great idea? For one euro you can rent a 'Serenity Box' on the beach. Insert one euro and remove the bracelet (which includes the key) - put in your purse, camera, whatever - close the door and wear the bracelet.

The notice on the inside of the door asks you to clean the key before inserting it in the lock.

~~~~~
N'est-ce pas une bonne idée? Pour un euro, vous pouvez louer une "Sérénity Box» sur la plage. Insérez un euro et retirez le bracelet ( qui comprend la clé) - mettez votre sac à main, votre appareil photo et  tout autre objet à l'intérieur - fermez la porte et gardez le bracelet.
La Mandragore
Yesterday's photo was taken, sitting here at La Mandragore drinking a long cool Vittel Menthe. I love the Mandragore - it's owned and run by a well-known artist, Yves Bosio and his son. You always get such a friendly welcome. It serves deliciously fresh local food, as well as drinks of course.
~~~~~

The Lifeguards

Summer in Menton. Some beaches have lifeguards, some don't.

L'été à Menton. Certaines plages ont des maîtres nageurs sauveteurs, d'autres non.

Before 'La Rentrée'

Not long now and it will be time for 'la rentrée' when the crowds leave the beaches and head for home. Back to work and back to school. But for the moment, no one is thinking of that ...

~~~~~
Dans peu de temps maintenant, ce sera l'heure de  «la rentrée» quand la foule quittera les plages et rentrera chez elle. Retour au travail et à l'école. Mais pour l'instant, personne ne pense à ça.
Flamenco! - the Mayor and 'la Petite Gitane'
This was the 11th year of the Flamenco Festival in Gorbio. No small thanks are due to our mayor, Monsieur Michel Isnard. I love that a mayor walks around in a soft shirt, jeans and with designer stubble ... He's a renowned artist himself and but for him we'd not enjoy so many fabulous cultural events in the village. He's hard-working, down to earth, encouraging to everyone - he calms tensions - and is so well liked. The village is all the better for having a mayor like Michel.
But the Flamenco Festival is something very special for our mayor. At the microphone he told a story of a gitan child, 'la petite gitane,' whose family was one of many gitan families persecuted by Franco during the Spanish civil war and who fled Spain and ended up in France. That was Michel Isnard's mother.
No wonder he adores and promotes the passion of the gitan flamenco.
And a final word of thanks to the incredible Isabel Cortes and Luis De Alméria. They own 'Los Flamencos' their flamenco dance and singing school at Port de Bouc, not far from Marseilles. Each year they organise this festival bringing with them the sensational dancers, singers and musicians. And normally, if we are lucky, Isabel (who also gives flamenco classes each afternoon in the Salle des Fetes) dances for us at the end of the evening. (see the last photo). Senor De Almeria is a renowned gitan singer and we heard his wonderful voice in the church on the first night.
Thank you Monsieur le Maire and all the volunteers. And thank you Isabel Cortes, Luis De Alméria and all the dancers, singers and musicians. Until next year ...
~~~~~

Flamenco! - Curtain Call

It's almost over - time for the curtain calls.  Here are three of the dancers - Y Jesus Carmona, Maria Moreno and  Antonio Morino 'Choro.'  We saw the beautiful Maria dancing HERE.   The male dancers were every bit as fabulous as the women but I'm not happy with my photos of them - so we'll see the boys next year!

Flamenco! - Alejandra Hernandez

Don't you just adore the dress! This is Alejandra Hernandez who danced fabulously. How difficult must it be to not only dance flamenco but manage this amazing dress and on top of that do all sorts of clever things with the shawl!

~~~~~
La robe n'est-elle pas adorable! Il s'agit d' Alejandra Hernandez qui a magnifiquement  dansé.  Comme il doit être difficile , non seulement de danser le  flamenco, mais de bouger cette robe incroyable et en plus de cela, de faire toutes sortes de mouvements harmonieux avec le châle!
Flamenco! - Sarini Nieto
During the Flamenco Festival in Gorbio, we had three glorious nights of good food, great music and singing and of course, the passion of flamenco. These photos of dancer Sarini Nieto were taken on the first night.
Flamenco isn't easy to photograph - the camera has to deal with low light - worse, continually changing light - and of course incredibly fast movement. You snap away and get a lot of disasters but, with luck, you get one or two that work. It's a challenge and I learned a lot about using camera settings I'd not tried before. And it was the best fun.
----------
Pendant le Festival de Flamenco à Gorbio, nous avons eu trois nuits sensationnelles avec de bons repas, de la bonne musique et des chants, et bien sûr, la passion du flamenco. Ces photos de la danseuse Sarini Nieto ont été prises la première nuit.
Le Flamenco n'est pas facile à photographier - l'appareil  doit s'accommoder d'une faible luminosité - pire,d'une lumière en continuelle évolution - et bien sûr du mouvement incroyablement rapide. Vous photographiez et obtenez beaucoup de choses ratées, mais, avec de la chance, vous avez une ou deux photos réussies. C'est un défi et j'ai beaucoup appris sur l'utilisation des paramètres de l'appareil que je n'avais pas essayé avant. Et c'était le meilleur plaisir.
Flamenco! - the Paella
The paella was fabulous.  It was cooked by a great company who come from Draguigan in the Var - called Le Vraie Paella - here's a few pics to give you a taste of the evening.  Wish you could smell it!
Flamenco! - the Volunteers
After the beautiful chants in the church, everyone has made their way to the Place aux Victoires for dinner under the stars and where, later, we'll enjoy fabulous flamenco.   We've been shown to our allocated tables and served delicious (and strong!) sangria by the many volunteers in their red t-shirts.   Alain lights a candle - and that's Pierre in the photo below.  The volunteers were truly fabulous - organised, helpful and obviously having a good time themselves. Bravo to the volunteers of Gorbio!  Tomorrow: the paella!
Après les beaux chants dans l'église, tout le monde s'est dirigé vers la Place des Victoires pour le dîner sous les étoiles et où, plus tard, nous allons admirer le fabuleux flamenco. On nous a conduits à la table qui nous était attribuée et une délicieuse (et forte!) Sangria nous a été servie par les nombreux bénévoles vêtus de t-shirts rouges. Alain allume une bougie - et c'est Pierre dans la photo ci-dessous. Les bénévoles étaient vraiment remarquables - organisés, utiles et de toutes évidences passaient eux-mêmes un bon moment. Bravo aux bénévoles de Gorbio!
Demain: la paella!
Flamenco! - Gitane Chants in the Church
Gorbio's famous Flamenco festival started two nights ago. Before the paella, before the fabulous dancing, we listened to exquisite religious gitane chants in the church, which was packed with an appreciative audience. Those present included the celebrated singer, Luis de Almeria, along with Diego and Frasquita Contreras with Manuel Gomes on guitar.
The short video below was part of TF1 Journal last night on television - see and hear the chants in the church and watch the dancing. Just over two minutes ...
Jardin Botanique Exotique du Val Rahmeh
 Menton is famous for its gardens. This photo shows a corner of the villa at the Jardin Botanique Exotique du Val Rahmeh - one we've not yet visited.
The property was originally owned by the Monléon family. In 1905 it was bought by Lord Radcliffe, a former governor of Malta and was used to grow subtropical and tropical plants. Later it passed to Miss May Campbell, a rich English lady, and then to France's National Natural History Museum. It retains the air of an Arts and Crafts private garden.
Lotus
The Lotus flower grows in several of Menton's famous gardens. These pics were taken in the Serre de la Madone.
The sacred Lotus, Nelumbo nucifera, is an important spiritual symbol in Eastern religions. It represents purity, divine wisdom, and the individual's progress from the lowest to the highest state of consciousness.
All parts of the lotus are edible. Apparently the seeds, which can be eaten raw or cooked, have a chestnut-like flavour. The lotus grows in water and some people think it's a type of waterlily but it isn't? There is no relation to the water lily.
Look at the extraordinary circular seed pods. Look at the light and shade created by the beautiful leaves. And then look at the glorious flower. Isn't it a wonder ...
La fleur de lotus pousse dans plusieurs célèbres jardins de Menton . Ces photos ont été prises dans la Serre de la Madone.
Le Lotus sacré, Nelumbo nucifera, est un symbole spirituel important dans les religions orientales. Il représente la pureté, la sagesse divine, et les progrès de l'individu du plus bas au plus haut niveau de conscience.
Toutes les parties du lotus sont comestibles. Apparemment, les graines, qui peuvent être mangées crues ou cuites, ont une saveur de châtaigne. Le lotus pousse dans l'eau et certaines personnes pensent qu'il s'agit d'un type de nénuphar, mais ce n'est pas le cas. Il n'a aucun rapport avec le nénuphar.
Regardez les extraordinaires gousses de graines rondes. Regardez la lumière et l'ombre créées par les belles feuilles. Et enfin regardez la fleur glorieuse. N'est-elle pas merveilleuse ...
