The Village Fête - the Boules Competition 5

These three great guys saw me taking photographs and said, 'Take our photograph,' and promptly posed for me. I took the one above and then told them that they were standing in too much shadow - and so we moved into a more open area and I took another - the smaller photograph on the left.

However, despite shadows, I prefer the first one. It seems to me these guys - obviously great buddies - are more relaxed - they look at the camera in a more natural and direct manner. In the second one - well, it seems more posed to me, less natural. What do you think?

  1. I would say the older one is the father and the younger one is his youngest son and the middle one is his middle son. Their noses are all from the same family.

  2. Hands down, the shadowy one is my favorite. I just love the dappled effect shadows cast. Much more interesting. Your first instinct was the best but I know what you were thinking. What if it's too shadowy and I have no backup photo?? I have that discussion in my head all the time. Lovely relaxed portrait of these three.

  3. I agree, your first photo is in the moment, unrehearsed, more natural. Perfect portrait of these Boule competitors!

  7. And once more - the spontaneity in the first one is great. I think it could be THREE generations, not two as abraham suggests!

  8. Hmm... I like them both to be honest :)

In the first one they are all so serious..yet spontaneous.

Teh second one has them all smiling, even though they do look more aware of the camera. If they are all in the same family I think both pictures make great family portraits.

  9. Yep, the first one is much better - more interesting for the reasons you noted.
