A Walk above Gorbio - Canne de Provence

This plant is called Canne de Provence (Arundo Donax) and was once used to make light hedging or windbreaks with the stems being woven as they grew. It's still used to make baskets in Spain and if the stems are poorly stored, the 'cannissiers' are subject to a specific dermatitis from a mold. You see it all over the place here, where it's often mistaken for bamboo or pampas grass. In this region, it's also known as a reed and is used to make split cane.
