Fête de la Saint-Barthélemy - the Restored Altar

This is the side altar of the Church of Saint Barthélemy in Gorbio that has been so beautifully restored by Mihaela Articuci who we saw yesterday singing in the Place des Victoires.

Mihaela had to delicately scrape away the top surface to find fragments of frescoes beneath (see the small photo) and then to restore them. You can see the full set of photos of work in progress, and in great detail, by clicking on THIS LINK

The display outside the church shows some of these photos.  The restored altar was blessed by the curé during the service.

Voici l'autel latéral de l'église de Saint-Barthélemy de Gorbio  si magnifiquement restauré par Mihaela Articuci que nous avons vue chanter hier, sur la place des Victoires.

Mihaela a dû gratter d

  1. Jilly, thanks for giving an insight into life in Gorgio, it is very interesting. I'm surprised by how many festivals and occasions the village celebrate. I am planning to visit Gorbio next month during my annual holiday in Menton.

  2. Kim, you are right, Gorbio has so many Fetes. The Fete de la Branda is on Sunday the 7th October. Perhaps you'll be here for that? And this year the Restaurant Beausejour is opening until the 15th October (closed Wednesday). Also the bar has been completely refurbished so another nice place to eat. Great pizzas on Friday and Saturday nights!

  3. Jilly, many thanks for the information but I will be in Menton towards the end of October. I have previously visited Menton in the summer, but this year I thought I would like to see the town in a different season. I regularly view your site and listen to Riviera Radio on-line to remind me of lovley times.
