Subtle

Christmas decorations stay up a long time in Menton but the silver trees along the Promenade du Soleil will be removed eventually and lamps will replace them. Personally I like these trees - they are subtle which is sometimes how I think of Menton - it's not garish, not rah-rah-rah like some of the famous resorts further along the coast. Menton is quietly beautiful with its soft subtle colours.

  2. I love the starkness of this photo. Check out Virginia in Birmingham's photo today, which is similar!

  3. You made me smile Jilly, with this "rah rah rah" expression ! I don't know what it means exactly, but, in the context, I can imagine !! We would say "bling bling", I guess.
You describe exactly the feeling that makes Menton a little different from its neighbours.

  4. I agree, they are quite beautiful and I also loved them lit up as you can see in these photos if you care to: http://picasaweb.google.be/jerry.rocteur/Public?feat=directlink#

  5. I remember Menton in winter and you're right, there's something softly and quietly beautiful about the place that I really like.

AND you have the sea! How I envy you that!

  6. I wonder, Jilly, is this is why you chose Menton for your home.

  7. And I'd just bet that at night it is all twinkly and beautiful. I was amazed at all the decorations still up in Paris as well. A little bonus for us!

  8. Your promenade reminds me of the Malecon in Mazatlán, wishing I were there, and I'd bet that their Christmas decorations are already coming down to make way for the Carnaval in a few weeks.

  9. Your holiday trees are much more attractive than those we have. We do not have anyone working at the city who knows anything about landscaping, trees or shrubs and as a result we have some odd looking plantings.

  10. I like the starkness of the single upright tree facing the sea in winter. It does have a subtle beauty all its own.

... and referring to your previous posts, your "best photo" with the little girl is really magnificient!!

  12. beautiful. even at daytime the stylish minimalism works because the landscape doesn't need - or even allow - any "tacky".
