Gardens: Maria Serena - the Villa

Menton is famous for its gardens with tours available to most of them all year round. Let's spend a few days wandering the gardens of the Villa Maria Serena which is almost at the Italian frontier. Yesterday's photos of the boat with Menton in the background were taken from the terraces.

This Belle Epoque villa was built for the Lesseps family in 1886 by architect Charles Garnier who, of course, designed the Paris Opera House and also the Monte Carlo Opera House. In 1923 the villa was sold by Giselle de Lesseps, Baronne la Caze to an Englishman, Henri Konig but during the Second World War, it suffered considerable damage by bombardments. Eventually, in 1947, the building and 15,000 square metres of gardens was bequeathed to the city of Menton.

There is also a beautiful campanile which you can't see in these photos, but which we'll see another day.
